Colle Formica

Lazio Italy

Colle Formica is a family-run winery located in Velletri, approximately 40 km south-east of Rome, in the Lazio region. The winery was established in 2018 by the Bombetti family, who have owned and worked the land for over a century. Their vineyards span nearly 3 hectares, with over 1.5 hectares dedicated to Malvasia and Trebbiano vines, some of which are over 40 years old. Additionally, Sangiovese grapes for red and rosé wines are sourced from a nearby plot.

Situated at an altitude of around 200 meters above sea level, the vineyards benefit from rich volcanic soil with clayey components. Colle Formica follows sustainable practices, eschewing herbicides, pesticides, and chemical fertilizers. In the cellar, vinification is carried out solely with indigenous yeasts, without temperature control, and with minimal sulfur usage. The lunar phases guide the decanting and bottling processes.

Sergio and Paolo Bombetti, the father-son duo behind Colle Formica, split their time between the winery and Rome, where Paolo runs a bed and breakfast. Their dedication to organic farming and traditional winemaking methods reflects their deep-rooted connection to the land. Despite being a young winery, Colle Formica's thoughtful approach to winemaking has garnered attention, particularly for their range of unique and easy-drinking wines.

The vineyards, nestled in a hilly area near the sea, benefit from a Mediterranean climate and volcanic soil, contributing to the elegance and character of the wines. Sergio, who learned winemaking from his father, is passing down his knowledge to Paolo, who has a degree in economics but has embraced winemaking as his passion.

Colle Formica's wines, crafted from indigenous grape varieties and produced with minimal intervention, offer a true expression of the terroir and reflect the Bombetti family's commitment to natural winemaking. The wines ferment spontaneously, are aged in fiberglass tanks, are mot filtered or clarified, and bottles with only a little bit of added SO2 if needed. With each bottle, wine enthusiasts are invited to experience the authentic flavors of Lazio and the legacy of a family dedicated to preserving their heritage through sustainable viticulture.
