The Harkamp Winery, situated in South Styria, Austria, boasts a rich history spanning nearly a century. Founded in 1926 by Anna and Franz Harkamp, the winery started with a 1-hectare vineyard on Flamberg in Sausal. Over the years, it has evolved into a renowned establishment under the leadership of Hannes Harkamp, who inherited the winery in 1990 and expanded it to encompass 20 hectares of vineyards across coveted locations like Oberburgstall, Kogelberg, and Flamberg.
The winery’s commitment to quality is evident in its meticulous viticultural practices. Only grapes from vineyards with vines at least 15 years old are used for their single-vineyard wines, ensuring lower yields and optimal grape quality. Moreover, the transition to organic and biodynamic farming methods underscores their dedication to sustainability and natural winemaking.
One of the winery’s specialties is Méthode Traditionnelle sparkling wines. Crafted with precision and care, these sparkling wines undergo traditional bottle fermentation, resulting in complex and vibrant flavors. The biodynamic cultivation of vineyards plays a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of these sparkling wines, allowing the grapes to express the unique terroir of Sausal.
In addition to its winemaking prowess, Harkamp Winery places a strong emphasis on environmental stewardship and biodiversity. By abstaining from synthetic chemicals and fostering biodiversity in the vineyards, they create a harmonious ecosystem that enhances soil health and grape quality.
The winery’s dedication to excellence extends beyond winemaking to its commitment to its employees and community. Petra Harkamp, alongside her husband Hannes, plays a crucial role in managing the winery’s operations, product management, marketing, and sales. Together, they embody the values of respect, subtlety, and continuous improvement, ensuring that each bottle of Harkamp wine reflects their passion and philosophy of winemaking.
