Abbazia San Giorgio

Pantelleria Italy

Situated on the rugged island of Pantelleria, Abbazia San Giorgio is a winery founded in 2015 by Battista Belvisi, an agronomist specializing in natural winemaking. Spanning approximately 3.5 hectares in Khamma, southeast Pantelleria, the vineyards predominantly grow Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria), along with other varieties like Grillo, Pignatello, Carignano, and Nerello Mascalese.

Embracing biodynamic principles, Battista avoids pesticides and chemicals, instead opting for natural methods to nurture the vines. The UNESCO-recognized alberello vine-training system enables the vines to thrive in Pantelleria's challenging environment: it’s rocky, windy and pretty dry. But the terroir is fantastic for the wines which show the mineralty and elegant structure of the volcanic soils, salinity from the seabreeze and polity fruitiness from the generous sun.

Grapes are meticulously hand-harvested and undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts in the cellar. Both red and white wines are vinified with long macerations, showcasing the winery's commitment to minimal intervention winemaking.

Battista Belvisi, known as "Battistone," brings his expertise to every aspect of winemaking, ensuring that each bottle captures the essence of Pantelleria's volcanic soils and sun-drenched vineyards. Abbazia San Giorgio stands as a testament to Battista's dedication to crafting authentic, terroir-driven wines that embody the spirit of Pantelleria.
